Woden Blues Team of the Decade - 2005

A massive thanks to everyone who made Ruck N Roll 05 such a successful night. A big thanks must go out to those who performed, organized and helped with everything especially Rich who came down from Sydney, The Love Machine Razz-Dogg Fowler, Cooko and the boys from Casual Sets, and Shaz and Wally who organized the trophies for the Team of the Decade.

Team of the Decade

Fullback:  Paul Nihill

Canberra District Representative player, Pauls hardness at the ball is unmatched. A three time Premiership Player, Nizey has been rewarded with the Woden Blues 2005 Captaincy.

Back Pockets

Sean Lyons:  A mercurial defender, Rowdy's endurance was legendary, not missing a game through injury in 4 seasons. His ability not to miss an end of season trip was also legendary. 3 time premiership player

Wayne Bennett: A genuine club stalwart, Budge moved progressively further back from a season in the forwards and on ball to a full time back pocket. The third Blue to 100 games, and 2 time Premiership player.

Centre Half Back - Brendan Turner:  The only man to win most improved 3 years in a row, Brendo has spent much of his career down back before reinventing himself as a forward occasionally put into the ruck. Brendo was the second Blue to 100 games, and is a 3 time Premiership player.

Half Back Flank

Glenn Wilson:  An old school hard nut, Willo annoyed opponents on the field, and teammates at the club. The only one of the Tuggeranong 6 to play more than a season, Willo's raking left boot set up and kicked many a goal.

Stan Parrott: A First season Blue, former Captain and Players Player in the inaugural season, Stan The Muss never let an opponent get an easy kick – if he couldn’t get the ball, he got the head. Played with broken hands and ribs at various times, Stan led from the front, backs or centre – wherever he was put!

Centre: Steve Kettewell:  Ketts was the Blues first ever League Best and Fairest, also winning a pair of Club Best and Fairests. Tough, hard and forever positive, Ketts was a rare Blue - he could kick off both feet!

Wings

Simon Visser:A true athlete turned alcoholic, Vis did not drink when he joined the Blues. CDs Representative Player, he accidentally joined the Blues looking for the Murrumbidgee Juggernauts training. A Best and Fairest winner, and 3 time Premiership Player.

Ashley Carter - A man of mystery, no one knows what Carts is thinking at any point in time. Arguably the fastest man to ever play for the Blues, Carts is a 3 time Premiership Player. Also known for random text messages and his Luv of Piss

Centre Half Forward - Mark Langhorne: a mountain at Centre Half forward, Langers brilliant hands and silky skills made him the Blues target up forward. An original Blue and Club best and joint fairest winner in 1997, Langers was always double teamed but rarely beaten.

Half Forward Flanks

Tim White:A former Captain and Original player, Whitey was most famous for his handpass along the boundary to himself, the regather followed by a checkside goal. Tim was a R/U B&F in 1998, and the first Blue to 50 games.

Paul Maher: Junior burst out of the shadow of older brother Chugger, his versatility and durability for the last four seasons has been legendary. A 3 time Premiership player, Junior has declared he will be the first Blue to 200 games.

Full Forward - Wayne Harmer: King Wally, the 8 time leading goalkicker, 6 times for the League . Wally has kicked 100 on at least 4 occasions, including 19 straight one day against Cooma. Destroyed many an opponent on and off the field, Wally is a CDs representative and 3 time Premier.

Forward Pockets

Sean Nihill

The Pirate is a 3 time Premiership player, always giving 100%. Never afraid to put his head over the ball, his courage is only matched by brother Paul. Seanos efforts are inspiring on the field and hilarious off the field.

Dave Stembridge

Stembos ability to win the hard ball, and play brilliantly with monsterous hangovers were legendary. The only man in the Blues the coach wanted to see hungover before a game, Stembo was R/u in the 2000 Best and Fairest

Ruckman - Troy Goodman: Buckets is the Blues most dominating ruckman. After giving away International Volleyball, Buckets took up amateur football, and scared life out of every ruckman that opposed him. A 3 time premiership player, Buckets was dangerous on and off the field! Buckets remains the only man hospitalized before a Presentation Night was completed

Followers

Matthew O'Loughlin: Known for his Fabio hair, his Biggles headgear and copious strapping tape, Eppa was the human battering ram. Known for his ability to change a game with a hit, a tackle or a hard ball get, Eppa is a 3 time Premiership player who brought up 50 games in 2004.

Rich Wharton (Captain) Captain Courageous, Whartos small stature belies his brilliant ability. Despite always copping extra attention from opposition thugs, Whartos speed and skills are unmatched. A League Best and Fairest, 2 time Blues Best and Fairest, CDs Representative Player and 3 time Premiership Captain, he can also sing a bit!

Interchange

Paul Banks  Original players and Former Captain/Coach of the Blues, Banksy was renowned for never stopping yapping. Banksy played wherever an opponent needed stopping!

Brett Stabb A three time Premiership player, Stabbzy showed true commitment in training and playing for the Blues despite living at Batemans Bay. Luvs the Piss too

Tim Sharman  Best known for his barefoot pre-season training, Sharman the Barman was once the fittest man in the club! The first choice ruckman for 6 years, Tim was a brilliant grab but terrible kick. His dream of averaging a goal a game remains unfulfilled!

Nathan Minerds  Big Red, Ginger Ninja, Nato is a well traveled Club stalwart. The only man to play in the Blues first season, Blues first Premiership team and Blues first game in CD 1s, Nato is always dreaming of taking Mark of the Year over the opposing Full Forward

Coach of the Decade - Wayne Cook - 3 time premiership coach, Cookie's legacy on the club is passion, commitment and heart. Known for his heartbreaking songs for the ladies at Karaoke on a Friday night, Cookie has been known to tear up at Presentation Nights and most formal Blues functions!

Manager of the Decade - Sharon Harmer - The ever present Shaz is the off field worker every footy club needs. Shaz does a hundred jobs each game day, and then drinks the boys under the table that night. Shaz is the proud daughter of the President and First Lady, Stu and Lorraine, and about the most useful person around!

2004 CD 2 North Grand Final Match Report Blues Make it 3 from 3!

The Woden Blues took out their third consecutive Grand Final on the weekend with a comprehensive thrashing of the Murrumbidgee Juggernauts in the Canberra District 2’s Grand Final.

Woden went into the match confident, and were on the board quickly, with Ash Carter kicking the first goal on the run. The Juggernauts fought back, and quickly found a couple of goals through their full forward Taylor. Woden steadied, and began to use the ball better across the field, and held the lead going into the first change by 7 points, despite Murrumbidgee targeting Blues Visser and A Woods for special attention.

The Blues remained physical at the ball, and some Jugs began to hear footsteps, whilst others decided the ball was too hard to touch so it was time to go the biff.

The Blues backline remained solid, with the brothers Nihill and Ben Woods patrolling the half back line and controlling the Jugs forwards. Stabb and Sean Nihill continued to tag the Jugs most attacking players, and stopped any Murrumbidgee flow.

The Blues continued to control the game, and kicked 3 goals in the third term to open up a 14 point lead at the main break. Coach Cook was pleased with his teams effort, and stressed to the boys to maintain the physical presence.

The advice was adhered to, as Murrumbidgee were only able to kick one more major for the match. A 70 metre goal to Keith Ward broke the hearts of the opposition, who gave up all hope when former Jug Matt Broers kicked a goal on the 3rd quarter siren.

Broers decided to put on a show in the final term, snapping a beauty from deep within the pocket on his way to four for the match and the Best on Ground trophy (additional salt added to the fresh Murrumbidgee wounds).

The final 50 point margin was indicative of the Blues dominance of the game, and a great way to farewell many Blues stars retiring or moving away, including full forward Wayne Harmer, centreman Brett Matthews, former Captain Keith Ward and coach for the past 5 years Wayne Cook.

Highlights of the match included Matt Broers efforts, Juggernauts Kim Pattersons mental disintergration and the Jugs obvious lack of respect for their team mate after he tried to pick a fight with the Blues, only to turn and run like a girl when challenged. He was not supported by a single team mate in this time...

2003 GF REPORT

Blues Premiers Back to Back!

The Woden Blues took out back to back CD2's Premierships last weekend in a comprehensive 58 point flogging of Gungahlin Jets.

The Blues lost Wharton (leg) and Spencer (wedding) from the Preliminary Final side, and brought back Max Cook and Trewhella from injury and overseas. Blues star wingman Visser passed a fitness test Thursday and played despite a broken bone in his hand, and onballer Sean Nihill brought up his 50th match in style.

The Jets were first out of the blocks, opening the scoring with a behind within 30 seconds of the match starting. A goal quickly followed, but that was all the joy the Jets would have for a long time... Woden began to get organised and control the pace and style of the match. The Blues superior skills were begining to show, as Woden were able to capitalise on Gungahlin mistakes, kicking 3 goals for the term against the breeze.

The Blues dominated the centre clearances, with Best on Ground Goodman proving that a night off the grog was good for his game (we just wish he had not drunk after the GF), and the Blues centre team of S Nihill, McMullan, Matthews and O'Loughlin not allowing the Jets a sniff. Up forward, Wal Harmer was on the way to 4 goals, ably assisted by the cannonball Max Cook who roved sensationally for a crucial pair of goals.

Gungahlin were able to put some pressure on the Blues defence, but cost themselves dearly with basic skill errors, unable to capitalise on numerous shots on the Blues goal late in the first and through the second term, kicking 3 behinds and 2 out on the full. These chances were not being missed at the other end of the park, where Woden were able to open up a 7 goal lead at the long break.

The match was effectively over as a contest and the sting went out of the Blues game. That was the opening the Jets looked for, kicking 3 goals

after the last break and bringing the margin back slightly, only for the Blues to wake up again and respond with 3 goals of their own.

With the breeze at their backs, the Blues finished the game far stronger, and only the Blues wastefulness late in the game stopping the final margin being a complete schallacking. Maher and Visser ended up with doubles, and the Blues celebrated back to back Premierships long into the evening, the next day, and for some well into Monday...

Woden 3.2 8.4 11.6 14.13 (97)

Jets 1.3 1.4 4.7 5.9 (39)

2002 GF REPORT

BLUES WIN GRAND FINAL!

The Woden Blues made club history with a convincing 40-something point win over the Murrumbidgee Juggernauts. Your humble correspondent can't remember all the details, as he has been drinking many of the sponsors tasty beverages, and can't remember a thing.

Congratulations to Wayne Harmer, who kicked 7 goals in the winning team, and Rich Wharton who won BOG in the grand final, robbing Rowdy of his hard earned medal! :)

CLUB ADMINISTRATION

CLUB HISTORY

The Woden Blues – A Quick History
Authors – Tim White, Wayne Bennett and others…

The Woden Blues Australian Rules Football Club was formed in 1996 by a group of Marist College Old boys. The side played in the Canberra District 2nd Division competition. The core group consisted of ex-Marist footballers, basketballers and their friends, primarily run by the Evans family.

After forming in the off-season, the club was initially trained by Stan Parrott. Ian McAuley was named club captain and coach, and went on to be club Best and Fairest and the competitions leading goalkicker. Tim and Steve Evans managed the club operations and kept the club alive through some tough first season on the field and off the field issues, managing to field a team strong each week.

Based at Mawson Oval (and often training in the dark) the club was involved in the Marist Juniors and Auskick. This relationship lead to the early changing of team songs from to the now famous “We are the Woden Blues song written by 1st year player Ed Smith, after complaints about the nature of the original song.

The team surprised all clubs finishing as minor premiers only to be eliminated early in the finals series with some controversial umpiring resulting in the captain coach going on report. However the Woden Blues were always a club to be feared from Week 1. This run of great seasons continued with Woden playing in every finals series through to 2000.

A changing of the guard over the next few years saw the injection of Paul Banks, an experienced NT footballer leading the boys and the now legendary inclusion of the Harmer family including six year leading goalkicker Wayne, and the management and support of his family.

In 1998, the Blues first forged formal links with the Canberra Irish Club providing a small sponsorship for the year. A stream of disgruntled Tuggeranong players come across with former Tuggernong Coach Jim Ingles, as well as half a dozen players new to the game and Jack Smith, who ended up playing in the Prime Ministers XI a couple of years later...

This batch of new players saw future committee members Brendan Turner and Wayne Bennett appear on the scene and as their football talents improved their involvement in the club also developed. With Mark Langhorne and Wayne Harmer ever present on the forward line the Blues successes continued. The 1998 team made the finals under the leadership of Tim White, famous for his handball to himself. Wayne Harmer won the League Leading Goalkicker.

In 1999, former Tuggernong Juniors coach Tino Pollini took the reigns, and the on-field success continued, with the Blues making the finals before being knocked out by ADFA. A formal committee had begun the long process of making the club as successful off field as on. The side again changed dramatically, with just a few of the Tuggeranong players remaining, including team champion Steve Kettewell, who won the League Best and Fairest, and old man Glenn Wilson. Dave Stembridge joined the club after hearing the club was about having a “kick and a beer and the playing roster had changed shape again. Wayne Harmer won the League Leading Goalkicker.

2000 saw the clubs 5th coach in 5 years, a karaoke stalwart from the Irish Club, Wayne Cook. Coach Cook came across from a successful playing career finishing up at Gungahlin, and took charge of a lineup that was short in numbers but big in heart. With Steve Kettewell forced to retire with injury halfway through the season, “accidental Blue Simon Visser went on to dominate the Club awards at the end of the season.

2000 also saw the Blues move to the relative luxury of Stirling Oval, and despite missing the finals for the first time, the Clubs future looked promising. Wayne Harmer won the League Leading Goalkicker.

Wayne Cook maintained the reigns in 2001, and with a influx of youth and experience into the side, and the return of a few old faces, the Blues made the finals again, being unluckily knocked out by ADFA in extra time. Baseballers Keith Ward and Eppa O’Loughlin joined the club on Coach Cooky’s suggestion and were joined by young faces in the form of the Nihill brothers, and Paul Maher, younger brother of former club champion Damian Maher.

Paul Topp, brother of first year player Dave Topp dominated the field for the Blues and won all the major trophies at the end of the season. Wayne Harmer won the League Leading Goalkicker.

2002 saw a "new-look" side again, and the Blues first Premiership. The Club went undefeated in the home and away series, with a memorable come from behind win over Belconnen and tight phyiscal clashes against Murrumbidgee season highlights.

The side was boosted by the recruitment of former Marist Junior and Eastlake player Richard Wharton, who went on to win the Clubs Best and Fairest and Players Player, the AFLACT Div 2 Best and Fairest, and Best on Ground in the Grand Final. Other recruits included giant ruckman and former National Volleyballer Troy Goodman, and an influx of former Marist juniors in Adam Woods, Ashley Carter and Jimmy Trewhella.

Wayne Harmer again won League Leading Goalkicker.

The first final was against arch-rivals Murrumbidgee, who took the match to Woden all day. A 2 goal victory saw the Blues into the Grand Final, which was a replay of the first final.

Sean Lyons was outstanding, and Wayne Harmers 7 goal game saw the Blues home. The result was a great reward for those loyal workers such as Stu and Lorraine Harmer, Manager Sharon Harmer, Treasurer Clive Dolan and the rest of the hard working committee.

Season 2003 began with the Blues continuing in same vein as 2002 - undefeated after 10 rounds of the season, despite massive upheaval in the playing list after the retirement of long time Blues Cookson, Minerds, Brittain, Stack, Parrott and Sharman. Veteran Brett Matthews joined the Blues for "one last season" and a chance at his first ever Premiership, whilst Tullibigeals finest Mick Picolo Fyfe moved up to the big smoke and tagged along for the ride.

The Blues struggled with numbers as the season progressed, and dropped 2 of their last 4 games to have dubious form going into the finals. However, the Blues managed to come good at the right end of the season, with a 10 goal victory over the Gungahlin Jets in a one sided Grand Final, landing Matthews his first ever flag in 17 years of senior football!

2004 saw another upheaval in playing stock, with the loss of Max Cook, Rowan Thompson and Tim Burke amongst others.

Woden gained many new players for 2004, many without recent football experience, and gave the newcomes opportunities to develop their skills.

The Blues started the shortened season well, going undefeated for the first 7 rounds until a trip to a wet and windy Ken Zimmer Oval, where they were defeated by the Gungahlin Jets in atrocious conditions.

After defeating arch rivals Murrumbidgee easily in Round 1, and by 7 points in a thriller at Round 6, the Blues were flogged in their Round 11 match at Stirling. After finishing level on points and winning the minor premiership on percentage, the Blues flogged Murrumbidgee in the Preliminary Final to make it through to their third consecutive Grand Final.... Time will tell if the Blues win!
