Bealtaine Fire Festival - Saturday 1st May
In Ireland, the festival of Bealtaine is associated with the Hill of
Uisneach in Co. Westmeath.
Legend has it that it was the location of the first great fire to be lit
in Ireland, and was visible in over a quarter of the land. All household
fires would be doused and then re-lit from the Bealtaine fire.
1st May is one of the Celtic quarter days, significant in the ancient
calendar as the first day of summer and the beginning of the light half
of the year.
