ELEANOR MCEVOY TOUR

Thursday,  18 January 2018

8pm

Ireland's internationally acclaimed contemporary singer-songwriter Eleanor  McEvoy will tour Australia  again in January 2018. Her repertoire will  feature songs from the Naked Music album and  her extensive back catalogue, and she will introduce songs from her latest album The Thomas Moore Project.

Eleanor McEvoy is perhaps best known for her songs 'Sophie' and the Irish standard 'Only A Woman's Heart'. Now based in Wexford, Dublin-born McEvoy's career originally started as a session musician, which included a long stint with The Irish National Symphony Orchestra and with The Mary Black Band. After writing the title track (recorded by Mary Black) on The Woman's Heart compilation, Eleanor decided to develop her own career, and was offered a U.S. record deal with Geffen Records.  The album went on to sell 250,000 copies. At the same time, 'A Woman's Heart' entered the Irish charts, selling over 750,000 copies,  and it remains one of Ireland's biggest selling albums of all-time, this year celebrating its 25th anniversary. These successes established McEvoy as one of Ireland's biggest stars, launching a career that has since seen her release twelve studio albums and tour the world. McEvoy has been on the road for two years with her show 'Naked…Live'. Sadly her collaborator on Naked Music, artist Chris Gollon died suddenly just after the international tour started. Gollum produced a series of paintings based on lyrics from each of the songs on the album. Exhibitons of his paintings were set up around the UK where Eleanor played and a book of paintings and lyrics was released.

A constant touring schedule through Europe and the UK has made 2017 a busy year for McEvoy, additionally she  has gone from being a long-time board member of IMRO (Irish Music Rights Organisation) to being its Chairman.

The Thomas Moore Project is  Eleanor's latest album and is  produced and arranged by McEvoy, The new album more than pays homage to this most celebrated 18/19th century Irish poet, singer, songwriter and entertainer (a most colourful Georgian character infamous for being a party to the burning of Lord Byron's memoirs after his death). Making his work accessible to a 21st Century audience, The Thomas Moore Project celebrates and revitalises some of the lesser and, indeed, well known material by the great man, such as 'Oft InThe Stilly Night', 'The Minstrel Boy' and 'The Harp That Once Through Tara's Halls'.  Eleanor performs vocals, guitars, strings and keyboards on the album and recruited Damon Butcher (The Beautiful South) on keyboards, Eamonn Nolan (The RTE Concert Orchestra) on flugelhorn, Eoghan O 'Neill ( Moving Hearts, Chris Rea and Riverdance) on bass and Guy Rickerby (Riverdance, Duke Special and The RTE Concert  Orchestra) on drums and percussion. The musicianship on the album echoes throughout every verse and chorus along with McEvoy's rich, lilting voice and beautiful playing.

Eleanor  said, "The Thomas Moore Project is the first significant step in my long journey to discover the wonderful songs and extraordinary life of Thomas Moore. I'm not sure when I began my intriguing quest but I do remember singing Thomas Moore songs in a choir when I was around nine years of age.  My fascination is not just with his music but also with his own place in history in a fantastic artistic period with contrasting a social and political upheaval in Europe and Ireland. My journey continues. I hope you will enjoy this and join me. My approach is maybe different; I needed to go further than just pay homage, so my arrangements for this choice of eleven songs are, I think, contemporary."
